Step 1 of 2
Scripted onlyIntake
Establish the question, whom the adviser represents, and the source of what was said. Keep the source and any later correction.
In this example
The questions and responses below were written for this illustration. They are not the words of Dan or of any client. No real client conversation or document collection occurred.
The starting question
What needs to be verified before assessing whether this household can retire together?
A scripted first conversation
Every adviser question and household response is invented. These are not Dan’s words or any client’s words.
1. Start with the goal
Scripted adviserWhat would you like retirement to look like, and what concerns you most?
Scripted householdI teach full time and I'm 58. My spouse is 56. We live in Suffolk County and hope to stop working in about three years. I want us to enjoy that time together, but I also want my spouse to have enough income if I die first.
2. Separate today from retirement
Scripted adviserWhat do you each earn today, and when would that pay stop?
Scripted householdMy salary is about $135,000 a year before tax. My spouse works full time as an operations coordinator for a private employer and earns about $65,000 before tax. If we both retire in three years, both paychecks would stop.
3. Keep the correction
Scripted adviserWhat does the household spend, including bills that do not come every month?
Scripted householdAbout $8,200 a month from our take-home pay. Actually, I left out roughly $8,400 a year for things like home and car upkeep, trips and gifts. Spread across the year, that brings us to about $8,900 a month. That's what we spend now; I don't know what retirement would change.
4. Locate the uncertainty
Scripted adviserWhat pension information do you have, and which payment option does it describe?
Scripted householdI remember seeing about $6,500 a month before tax, but I don't have the estimate with me. I don't remember the retirement date used or whether that amount continues anything to my spouse after I die. I need to check the actual estimate.
5. Complete the picture
Scripted adviserWhat savings and other benefits would we need to understand?
Scripted householdWe have about $100,000 in liquid savings, $450,000 in my 403(b), and $200,000 in my spouse's 401(k). We haven't brought statements, Social Security estimates or the details of any other employer benefits. We also haven't priced health coverage after leaving work.
6. Agree on what to investigate
Scripted adviserBefore assessing the retirement date, we would need to verify the pension options, household spending, benefits and accounts. Which concern should that work keep in view?
Scripted householdPlease keep the income for my spouse front and center. I'd like to understand what retiring together would mean before either of us makes a decision.
